The Eames Institute has unveiled designs for a new museum in Novato, California, planned to open in 2030. Herzog & de Meuron developed the scheme with executive architects EHDD and landscape architects Field Operations.
The project will transform an existing mid-century modern industrial campus into an 88.5-acre cultural destination. The site was acquired by the Eames Institute in August 2025, 60 years after completion of its principal building.
The 134,000-square-foot warehouse was originally commissioned by the McGraw-Hill Company and designed by Jan Lubicz-Nycz for the office of John Savage Bolles. The proposal retains the building’s hyperbolic paraboloid roof and original geometry while adapting it for public use.
The design centers on linking exhibition spaces with workshops, gathering areas, and the surrounding landscape. It also includes a new 120-foot bridge.
